Behind PhotographsMay 09, 2012
Behind photographs began as the personal quest of photographer Tim Mantoani to document and preserve noted photographers together with their images. "We have come to a point in history where we are losing both photographic recording mediums and iconic photographers," Mantoani comments. "While many people are familiar with iconic photographs, the general public has no idea of who created them. This book became a means to do that, the photographer and their photograph in one image."
Interview with Famed Photographer Joel Grimes filmed on a Canon 7D and GH1Mar 29, 2012
This week Scott and I, along with eleven other dedicated photographers had the pleasure of spending a weekend in the company of a truly visual artist, famed photographer Joel Grimes. Although his brush is light, his canvas now a silicon sensor, Joel Grimes is an artist whose brush strokes can be seen in each of his award winning photos. As we learned in his amazing seminar this weekend, the placement of light on our subjects can and must be crafted to create that stand out look that will "pop" off the page. Having attended a number of seminars over the years I can truly say that Joel's was prehaps the best and I know why that is. In addition to his artistry Joel also has a passion for teaching the craft and passing his talent and vision to others. If you have ever attened a workshop where in the end you felt as if the goal was to just market more things to buy, that is not the case here. Joel dumps his heart and soul into every moment of the seminar leaving nothing out and no one behind. Yes, if asked you can bet we will recommend you attend one of Joel's workshops if you can. You will never regret it and definitely never forget it. I know for Scott and I, we have become energized with new ideas, that we can't wait to try. Perhaps that is the best testiment, a rekindling of one's vision. I know for myself that has been the case. With that, I Mark Hensley, along with Scott Eccleston, Gary Lowell, and the attendies of your workshop here in not so sunny Maine, We Thank You ...

Photography Quote to Live By - Edward WestonMay 05, 2012
froknowsphoto.com Last week Zack Arias read a quote that resinated deeply with me. The quote was by a famous photographer named Edward Weston and get this, it was written in 1927. The fact is that relatively few photographers ever master their medium. Instead they allow the medium to master them and go on an endless squirrel cage chase from new lens to new paper to new developer to new gadget, never staying with one piece of equipment long enough to learn its full capacities, becoming lost in a maze of technical information that is of little or no use since they don't know what to do with it"
