It appears that billionaire Mark Zuckerberger has made another giant leap in controlling the Internet social media. His quite recent acquisition of Instagram is a shining expensive accompaniment to his vastly popular Facebook. The originator and manager of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberger, has bought Instagram for one billion dollars in stock and cash. The deal was finalized on Monday, April 10, 2012 and is being reported on all of the Internet news sites along with his own explanation of why he would spend one billion dollars to acquire a photo shop web site. For users of Facebook, the news is probably welcomed if they intend to use Instagram along with their Facebook site. For Zuckerberger, the acquisition is probably going to make him a very powerful Internet personage. For those who do not use online photo shop sites, finding out about Instagram is relatively easy and will continue to be so since Zuckerberger has made it known that he intends to leave Instagram operating as it always has while joining it to Facebook. Online users of Facebook and Instagram can use both sites to do whatever they wish to while also being able to use each separately. The acquisition by Mark Zuckerberger seems to be more of a desire on his part to own a photo shop and the software that Instagram uses and has developed. Abstract: Within the home, digital photos lack the physical affordances that make collocated photo-sharing easy and opportunistic. Family members have difficulty accessing the personal accounts of the photo organizer, navigating to these photos, or finding the desired ones within the vast number of photos stored on disk. Viewing photos on a standard PC screen is also awkward due to crowding. To promote in-home photo sharing, we designed Souvenirs, an RFID-based system that lets people quickly link digital photo sets to physical memorabilia. These memorabilia trigger memories and serve as social instruments; a person can enrich their story-telling by moving the physical memorabilia close to their large-format television screen, and the associated photos are immediately displayed. A person can also bring a mobile device near memorabilia: the photos appear on that display. Through pick and drop, a person can also transfer the photo display from the mobile device to the large screen for easier viewing. This video motivates and illustrates how all this works.
