DSLR Episode 3 - Depth of Field ManagementMay 14, 2012
Razor thin focus is cool and sexy, but it is far from a cornerstone of modern cinema. A lot of DSLR shooters shoot in natural light, and this causes us to shoot wide open on our lenses. But mainstream films are never shot in their entirety with a wide open aperture which is becoming far to common practice with a lot of film shot on DSLR's. Go watch some of the latest trailers and shows and study how far you can see into the background/foreground before objects begin to fall out of focus. There is more than shallow depth to a cinematic look, and by shooting with such narrow focus we are skimping on our creativity when it comes to composition and blocking.
